Actrices comparten sus experiencias de aborto frente a legislación que criminaliza la interrupción del embarazo en Georgia

Luego de que distintos estados de EE.UU. comenzaran a restringir el aborto, feministas de todo el mundo han decidido alzar la voz respecto a estas legislaciones que atentan contra la opción de las mujeres de decidir sobre su cuerpo.

El pasado martes el gobernador del estado de Georgia, Brian Kemp. firmó la ley “latido feal” (“Fetal Heartbeat”) que prohíbe el aborto si es que el corazón del feto palpita. Esta medida implica que no se podrá abortar después de las seis semanas, sin excepciones. Dicha ley castigará con cárcel a las mujeres que interrumpan su embarazo.

Ante esto, las actrices Milla Jovovich y Jameela Jamil hicieron uso de sus redes sociales para confesar que en algún momento de su vida tuvieron la necesidad de abortar.

“Pasé por un aborto de emergencia hace dos años. Estaba embarazada de 4 meses y medio y estaba en un rodaje en Europa del Este. Entré en trabajo de parto prematuro y me dijeron que tenía que mantenerme despierta durante todo el procedimiento. Fue una de las experiencias más horribles que he vivido (…) Cuando pienso en el hecho de que las mujeres podrían tener que enfrentar abortos en condiciones aún peores que yo debido a las nuevas leyes, mi estómago se revuelve. Entré en una de las peores depresiones de mi vida y tuve que reforzarme mucho para encontrar la salida. Me tomé un tiempo fuera de mi carrera”, escribió Jovovich en su cuenta de Instagram.

La protagonista de El Quinto Elemento (1997) relató además que se mantuvo aislada durante meses y tuvo que realizar distintos hobbies para poder sanar la depresión sin recurrir a medicamentos. “El aborto es una pesadilla en su máxima expresión. Ninguna mujer quiere pasar por eso. Pero tenemos que luchar para asegurarnos de que nuestros derechos se conserven para obtener uno seguro si es necesario. Nunca quise hablar sobre esta experiencia. Pero no puedo permanecer en silencio cuando hay tanto en juego”, puntualizó.

Our rights as women to obtain safe abortions by experienced doctors are again at stake. Last Tuesday, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed a draconian bill into law that outlaws all abortions after six weeks — before most women even realize they’re pregnant — including in cases of RAPE OR INCEST. This makes Georgia the sixth state to pass such a restrictive six-week abortion ban, joining Ohio, Mississippi, Kentucky, Iowa, and North Dakota. These laws haven’t been passed yet, but lawmakers in these states are trying. Abortion is hard enough for women on an emotional level without having to go through it in potentially unsafe and unsanitary conditions. I myself went through an emergency abortion 2 years ago. I was 4 1/2 months pregnant and shooting on location in Eastern Europe. I went into pre term labor and told that I had to be awake for the whole procedure. It was one of the most horrific experiences I have ever gone through. I still have nightmares about it. I was alone and helpless. When I think about the fact that women might have to face abortions in even worse conditions than I did because of new laws, my stomach turns. I spiraled into one of the worst depressions of my life and had to work extremely hard to find my way out. I took time off of my career. I isolated myself for months and had to keep a strong face for my two amazing kids. I started gardening, eating healthier and going to the gym everyday because I didn’t want to jump into taking anti depressants unless I had tried every other alternative. Thank God I was able to find my way out of that personal hell without turning to medication, but the memory of what I went through and what I lost will be with me till the day I die. Abortion is a nightmare at its best. No woman wants to go through that. But we have to fight to make sure our rights are preserved to obtain a safe one if we need to. I never wanted to speak about this experience. But I cannot remain silent when so much is at stake. #prochoice #prochoicegeneration

En tanto, una de las integrantes del elenco de la serie de Netflix The Good Place, Jameela Jamil, reveló que cuando joven debió interrumpir su embarazo. Sobre el episodio, la actriz aseguró que fue “la mejor decisión” que pudo hacer tanto para ella como para el bebé. “No quería, no estaba lista para ser madre, ni emocional, psicológica y financieramente. Muchos niños terminarán en hogares de menores. Muchas vidas arruinadas. Esto es muy cruel”, reflexionó.

I had an abortion when I was young, and it was the best decision I have ever made. Both for me, and for the baby I didn’t want, and wasn’t ready for, emotionally, psychologically and financially. So many children will end up in foster homes. So many lives ruined. So very cruel.
